As part of its community outreach, ICNE provides the marriage services in accordance with the Islamic code of marriage and the State regulations. This service is offered FREE of charge. Before requesting it, however, the applicant must first obtain a “Marriage License” from the City/Town Hall of his/her residence in the State. For example, in the State of Massachusetts the applicant should take the following steps:
Ø Both parties (prospective husband and wife) go to the Clerk’s office in person in the respective City/Town Hall with proof of date of birth(Birth Certificate, Passport, Driver’s License, or High School Diploma). The clerk’s office will have the parties fill out a simple form. Pay the required “fee” ($25 – $45). Wait for a period of three days. Go back to the Clerk’s office (anyone of the parties) and pick up the marriage license.
Ø Contact any Justice of the Peace of choice for the wedding ceremony arrangement. Present the license to the Justice of the Peace who will then perform the ceremony. The Justice of the Peace will sign the license and mail it directly to the Clerk’s office.
Ø Go to the Clerk’s office and request a certified copy of the license. There is a fee (about $12/copy) that the Clerk’s office will charge. The certified copy of the signed license is known as the Marriage Certificate.
If the parties choose to utilize the Council services, an Islamic Certificate will also be issued, in addition to the State Certificate, that will contain required information under the Islamic code.
